  8.  AB    ELPIDA, the Hellenic Association of AIDS Self-Help Groups, which is
  9.        recognized as a non-profit organisation in the health care sector, is
  10.        made up of people with HIV/AIDS, members of the groups primarily
  11.        affected by AIDS, friends and relatives and committed individuals from
  12.        the general public. The Athens-based parent organisation was founded in
  13.        1989 and has been joined by some five local AIDS groups since then.
  14.        Thanks to these groups ELPIDA has now become a nationwide self-help
  15.        network covering almost the whole country with about 300 volunteers. The
  16.        tasks of the Head Office of ELPIDA include: a. Development production
  17.        and distribution of information material. b. Organisation of the
  18.        exchange of information and experience among the local AIDS groups. c.
  19.        Provision of continuing education of the volunteer workers of the local
  20.        AIDS groups, the Head Office and the general public. d. Handling of the
  21.        public relations and the press work at a national level. e.
  22.        Establishment of contacts with international private and state health
  23.        organisations, AIDS Help-Groups, other associations, research facilities
  24.        and medical experts at home and abroad. The activities of ELPIDA
  25.        include: a. Caring for persons with HIV/AIDS at home in hospitals,
  26.        prisons, private clinics. b. Providing fast and non-bureaucratic help in
  27.        individual cases for people with HIV/AIDS. c. Promoting AIDS research by
  28.        performing psychosocial studies on AIDS. d. Working against
  29.        discrimination of afflicted persons and promoting their social
  30.        integration. e. Providing telephone and personal counselling. f.
  31.        Providing person to person information and on the spot counselling
  32.        (prison inmates, homosexuals). g. Setting up discussion groups and safe
  33.        sex circles. h. Founding and promoting self-help groups. i. Producing
  34.        leaflets and posters which provide information about local service and
  35.        activities. j. Organising workshops and seminars as well as handling
  36.        press work and presenting the interests of those affected at the
  37.        regional level. Finally, in terms of finances, the organisation has
  38.        received funds from membership-fees, donations, industry, associations,
  39.        communities, clubs and fund-raising efforts.
